Creating a Society
Decide what your society is about.
What are the aims and goals of your society? What sort of members are you looking for? Are there any other societies that already address these questions? Make sure you have a clear idea of how you want your society to look and operate before deciding to create one.
Reach out to other students, create a poll of Facebook or simply ask your friends. It's a good idea to figure out how many people will be interested in your society before creating it (this will also be useful when completing your society's constitution).
Establish your Committee
Every society, regardless of size, must be run by a Committee comprising of at least:
If your society has less than 20 members, then your Treasurer and President can be the same person. Other optional roles could include Social Media Manager, Events Manager, Communications Officer. If you are unsure of which roles you could include, please get in touch with the societies officer who will be happy to assist you.
You must have a Secretary who will be responsible for keeping track of funding requests, taking notes during meetings, and providing the Student Union with updates and information upon request. Once your society reaches 20 people, the Treasurer and the President can not be the same person.
Create a Logo
Your society will be showcased on this website and the NCHSU website, and having a logo makes your society easily recognisable. The recommended dimensions are 1000x1000, and we ask that you send your logo to email@example.com once you've submitted your application!
Write Your Constitution
Having a constitution is the most important part of creating a society, and you will not be allowed to function without one. Constitution templates can be found below - if you are unsure of how many members you will have, it is advised that you use the 'Small Society' Constitution template.
All you need to do is create a copy of the Google Doc and fill out/edit the parts in red. Make sure you read everything carefully, and that your committee agrees on everything. If you do not have full committee approval, then your constitution is invalid.
Submit Your Application
Once you have completed all of the steps above, please complete the 'New Society Application' form below. The Societies Officer will get back to you within a few days with the result and next steps.
Once your society is created, you can begin to host events, activities, competitions, discussions, outgoings, or whatever else your society wishes to do. You're welcome to create a Facebook page, Instagram account, group chat, etc to encourage people to join. Have fun!
